Senate Republicans unveil $568B counteroffer on infrastructure package

On Thursday, Senate Republicans unveiled a $568 billion infrastructure package. The proposal focuses on roads and bridges, public transportation, railways, drinking water, wastewater, safety, waterways, airports, water storage, and broadband Internet.

The Republican proposal would cost $568 billion over five years, the bulk of which would go toward the Federal Highway Administration for roads and bridges. The Federal Transit Administration would receive $61 billion for public transit; rail would receive $20 billion; the Environmental Protection Agency would get $35 billion for drinking water and wastewater; $13 billion would go toward safety; $17 billion for ports and inland waterways; $44 billion to the Federal Aviation Administration for airports; and $65 billion for broadband infrastructure.

Meanwhile the Biden administration proposed raising the corporate tax rate from 21% to 28% to pay for its $2.2 trillion infrastructure package. The White House said the tax hike would fund the infrastructure plan within 15 years and would be combined with plans to discourage firms from listing tax havens as their address and offshoring profits. Biden indicated the 28% tax rate isn’t a hard figure and he’s willing to compromise to win approval for his overall infrastructure plan.

Jana Kramer and husband Mike Caussin to divorce after 6 years of marriage

37-year-old country music singer and actress Jana Kramer has filed for divorce from husband Mike Caussin. Kramer announced the news on social media that her six-year marriage to the former football player was over, posting on Instagram: “As I try to make sense of a reality I never wanted to believe could be possible again, those words have now become a reality. I’ve fought y’all. I’ve loved hard. I’ve forgiven. I’ve put the work in. I’ve given everything I have, and now I have nothing else to give. It’s time.”  She continued, “Please know that I still believe whole heartedly in marriage, love and rebuilding. I just can’t fight any longer. It’s time to heal. Thank you for all the love, heart and support, in many ways you have fought on this journey alongside me, and for that I am grateful. I’ll always encourage you to continue the good fight, but you can’t fight it alone.”

A source told People magazine that the divorce is due to infidelity, which was an ongoing issue in the marriage. The split comes just seven months after the couple released their book The Good Fight: Wanting to Leave, Choosing to Stay, and the Powerful Practice for Loving Faithfully. In the book, Caussin spoke candidly about sex addiction, infidelity, and seeking treatment following a string of affairs.  After numerous cheating scandals, Mike went to rehab to help treat his sex addiction in 2016, and the spouses had been working on their relationship ever since. Jana and Mike share two children together, Jolie Rae, 5, and Jace Joseph, 2.

Police release footage, 911 calls in shooting of 16-year-old girl in Ohio

Authorities in Columbus, Ohio have released body camera footage and 911 calls from an incident in which a police officer fatally shot a teenage girl while responding to a disturbance call at a residence. Columbus officer Nicholas Reardon shot and killed 16-year-old Ma’Khia Bryant after she was seen attacking another female with a knife on Tuesday afternoon.

During a news conference, interim police Chief Michael Woods released graphic body cam footage of the shooting, saying that Reardon shot the girl as she was attempting to stab someone. Woods said officers arrived at the residence about 4:44 p.m. after dispatch received a call that “females were there trying to stab them and put their hands on them.” A caller can be heard screaming in a 911 call placed at 4:32 p.m. Tuesday, asking police to come and saying someone is trying to stab them. In a second call placed around 4:48 p.m., the caller hung up after seeing police at the scene.

Footage shows Reardon arriving first at the residence, and also shows Bryant pushing another female to the ground in an attempt to stab her before attempting to stab a third female whom she had pressed up to the side of a car. Reardon can be heard saying “get down” multiple times in the footage and then at least four gunshots are heard before the girl falls to the ground but police have not confirmed whether additional shots were fired.

The Columbus Police Department took Reardon off street duty and Ohio’s Bureau of Criminal Investigation launched a criminal investigation.  He said the ongoing investigation will determine whether the actions of the officer fall under what is considered permissible.

Reports of minor ‘breakthrough’ COVID-19 cases among those fully vaccinated appear mild

Reports of coronavirus ‘breakthrough’ infections, occuring when fully vaccinated individuals get the illness, suggest that the vaccines still offer strong protection against severe disease even in the face of variants.

Two cases in the New England Journal of Medicine on Wednesday show just two women out of more than 400 fully vaccinated study participants, who were tested for Covid-19 weekly, developed mild cases of the disease and recovered quickly.  Last Friday, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said it had received reports of around 5,800 breakthrough infections out of more that 77 million fully vaccinated people.

CDC officials are gathering more data on breakthrough cases to determine if any patterns exist among patients. Among the questions the agency is asking is whether certain variants are more likely to play a role in breakthrough cases. Because the report included just two cases, it’s too early to draw any conclusions about which variants are most likely to lead to breakthrough infections.ed and one individual died.
