After dealing with years of infertility issues and multiple health battles, Maria Menounos and her husband Keven Undergaro have welcomed their first baby together. The entertainment journalist shared with the publication that her daughter, Athena Alexandra, was born on June 23 via a surrogate, calling it “the most special moment of my life … I sat with her on my chest, and Keven and I kept looking at each other like, ‘Oh, my God.’ It was just pure joy. For so long, I’ve felt something’s been missing. And now I feel so grounded, like I finally know where I belong. Athena is our miracle baby. I’m so grateful for her.”” Menounos also explained how she and Undergaro chose the name Athena: “We knew we wanted a Greek name. . . . Athena is the goddess of war and wisdom, and Keven loved the power of that name, so that was it!”

Menounos was diagnosed with a brain tumor in 2017, and she was also diagnosed with stage two pancreatic cancer back in January. She underwent a successful surgery to remove a 3.9 cm tumor on her pancreas and is now in remission.

Ariana Grande dating ‘Wicked’ co-star Ethan Slater after split from husband

According to multiple sources, Ariana Grande is dating her “Wicked” co-star Ethan Slater amid her split from estranged husband Dalton Gomez.

TMZ broke the news that Grande and Slater, who is also reportedly separated from his wife, singer Lilly Jay, started dating several months ago after meeting on the set of the film. A photo of the ‘Wicked’ cast from March celebrating Michelle Yeoh’s Oscar win in London showed Grande sitting close to Slater with his arm wrapped around her. TMZ said that Slater and Grande got together after he already had separated from Jay, who married in 2018 and welcomed a son together last year. Grande reportedly separated from Gomez in January, after two years of marriage.

The 31-year-old Slater, who plays Boq in the film adaptation of the Broadway musical, rose to fame starring in “SpongeBob SquarePants: The Broadway Musical.” The actor was nominated for a Tony Award for his role.

‘Wicked’ composer Stephen Schwartz said that filming has been paused due to the SAG-AFTRA strike, with about 10 days of work to go. Director Jon M. Chu said the disruption shouldn’t affect the film’s November 2024 release date.

Judge rejects Trump’s effort to move New York hush money case to federal court

A federal judge on Wednesday rejected former President Donald Trump’s bid to move his hush-money payments case from New York state court to a federal venue. The ruling from U.S. District Court Judge Alvin Hellerstein means the case will stay in Manhattan criminal court, where District Attorney Alvin Bragg’s office is prosecuting Trump on 34 felony counts of falsifying business records. A spokesperson for Bragg said: “We are very pleased with the federal court’s decision and look forward to proceeding in New York State Supreme Court.”  The case will now go back to state criminal court in Manhattan, where it will be overseen by Judge Juan Merchan, and is scheduled to go to trial in March.

Pleading not guilty, Trump argued that the payments were connected to his duties as president and that the case should therefore be heard in federal court; Judge Hellerstein rejected that argument, writing in his 25-page ruling: “Trump has failed to show that the conduct charged by the Indictment is for or relating to any act performed by or for the President under color of the official acts of a President. Trump also has failed to show that he has a colorable federal defense to the Indictment.”

Hellerstein said in his ruling: “The evidence overwhelmingly suggests that the matter was a purely a personal item of the President — a cover-up of an embarrassing event. Hush money paid to an adult film star is not related to a President’s official acts. Falsifying business records to hide such reimbursement, and to transform the reimbursement into a business expense for Trump and income to Cohen, likewise does not relate to a presidential duty.” The conduct Trump is accused of covering up includes a $130,000 payment his then-lawyer Michael Cohen made to adult film star Stormy Daniels near the end of the 2016 presidential campaign to keep quiet about an alleged affair with Trump. Trump has acknowledged repaying Cohen in a series of payments in 2017 but he maintains the payments were on the up-and-up, and that he never had an affair with Daniels.

A Trump campaign spokesperson said in a statement that “this case belongs in a federal court and we will continue to pursue all legal avenues to move it there.” Trump’s attorneys had argued the former president could claim additional defenses in a federal court setting, in part because they say he would not have hired Cohen as his personal lawyer had he not been elected president.

Stanford University president announces resignation amid scrutiny over his research

On Wednesday, the president of Stanford University announced his resignation, citing an independent review that found flaws in some papers he authored, but cleared him of research misconduct. Tessier-Lavigne has been president for nearly seven years.

Marc Tessier-Lavigne said in a statement to students and staff that he would step down Aug. 31. Tessier-Lavigne, a neuroscientist, says he “never submitted a scientific paper without firmly believing that the data were correct and accurately presented,” but added that he should have been more diligent in seeking corrections regarding his work. Tessier-Lavigne says he’s stepping down because he expects continued debate about his ability to lead the university, but will remain on faculty as a biology professor. Tessier-Lavigne also said he will continue his research into brain development and neurodegeneration.

The resignation comes after the board of trustees launched a review in December following allegations Tessier-Lavigne engaged in fraud and other unethical conduct related to his research and papers. The review assessed 12 papers that Tessier-Lavigne worked on — which were published before Tessier-Lavigne became Stanford president — with five of them in which he was the principal author. Tessier-Lavigne said he was aware of issues with four of the five papers but acknowledged taking “insufficient” steps to deal with the issues. He said he’ll retract three of the papers and correct two.

The panel cleared him of the most serious allegations regarding a 2009 paper published in the scientific journal Nature, which was the subject of a fraud investigation and that fraud was found. The panel ruled there was no investigation and no fraud discovered. H. Holden Thorp, editor-in-chief of the Science family of journals, said:
“People tend to think of scientists as these individuals that they’ve heard of like Einstein and Marie Curie. The truth is that researchers run laboratories filled with people, and everything that happens in that laboratory is a product of many individuals there.” The report cleared Tessier-Lavigne of research misconduct, but Thorp said ultimately the boss is responsible for what happens in the lab – and shouldn’t be distracted by doing other jobs.

Board chair Jerry Yang said that they’ve named Richard Saller, a classics professor, as interim president starting Sept. 1. In a statement, Yang said Tessier-Lavigne was key to creating the university’s first new school in 70 years (Stanford Doerr School of Sustainability) and in 2019, he unveiled a strategic long-range plan that will continue to guide the university’s growth.

TJ Osborne shared: “We’ve always had a lot of mystery intentionally around the things we have done, but with this album, we decided to be all in. By acknowledging TJ’s personal life and my mental-health struggles, we are more ourselves creatively and publicly than we’ve ever been.”

The brothers co-wrote every song on the album, including their chart-climbing current single “Nobody’s Nobody;” and Miranda Lambert is the album’s sole guest artist, collaborating on “We Ain’t Good at Breaking Up,” which she co-wrote with Brothers Osborne and Jesse Frasure. Sheryl Crow slams Jason Aldean’s ‘Try That in a Small Town’ for ‘promoting violence’

Sheryl Crow is speaking out against Jason Aldean’s controversial new single, “Try That in a Small Town.” In a post on Twitter, Crow wrote: “I’m from a small town. Even people in small towns are sick of violence. There’s nothing small-town or American about promoting violence. You should know that better than anyone having survived a mass shooting. This is not American or small town-like. It’s just lame.” Crow quoted a viral post from ‘Moms Demand Action’ founder Shannon Watts, which points out how ironic Aldean’s song is, since he was in a mass shooting.

Initially released in May, “Try That in a Small Town” stayed under the radar until last week when Aldean and director Shaun Silva dropped a video for the song featuring the country star performing in front of a courthouse in Columbia, Tennessee, the site of a 1933 lynching, with footage interspersed depicting protests as violent and lawless. The backlash against the song (and Aldean) culminated with CMT pulling the music video for “Try That in a Small Town” from its rotation.

Aldean responded to the criticism with a lengthy post on social media:“In the past 24 hours I have been accused of releasing a pro-lynching song (a song that has been out since May) and was subject to the comparison that I (direct quote) was not too pleased with the nationwide BLM protests. These references are not only meritless, but dangerous. There is not a single lyric in the song that references race or points to it – and there isn’t a single clip that isn’t real news footage – and while I can try and respect others to have their own interpretation of a song with music – this one goes too far. ‘Try That In A Small Town,’ for me, refers to the feeling of a community that I had growing up, where we took care of our neighbors, regardless of differences of background or belief. Because they were our neighbors, and that was above any differences. My political views have never been something I’ve hidden from, and I know that a lot of us in this country don’t agree on how we get back to a sense of normalcy where we go at least one day without a headline that keeps us up at night. But the desire for it to – that’s what this song is about.”

Aldean’s wife Brittany also defended her husband, posting a photo alongside the singer with the caption, “Never apologize for speaking the truth❣🇺🇸 Media.. it’s the same song and dance. Twist everything you can to fit your repulsive narrative … How about instead of creating stories, we focus on the real ones such as child trafficking? Food for thought.”

Trump informed by special counsel he is a target in Jan. 6 probe

Former President Donald Trump on on Tuesday that he was informed by special counsel Jack Smith that he is a target in the Jan. 6 criminal investigation. Smith already has criminally charged Trump with about three dozen counts related to retaining classified documents when he left the White House. Letters sent by the Department of Justice provide its recipients the chance to testify before a grand jury after the DOJ determines there is substantial evidence linking them to a crime.

In a post on his Truth Social site, Trump also suggested he may soon face indictment for the Jan. 6 probe, which is focused on Trump’s efforts to overturn his loss in the 2020 election to President Joe Biden.  He said: “Deranged Jack Smith, the prosecutor with Joe Biden’s DOJ, sent a letter (again, it was Sunday night!) stating that I am a TARGET of the January 6th Grand Jury investigation, and giving me a very short 4 days to report to the Grand Jury, which almost always means an Arrest and Indictment.”  He added that he was given what he called the “horrifying news” on Sunday evening by his lawyers.

Trump is the leading contender for the 2024 Republican presidential nomination; and his lawyers have asked that any trial in that case take place after the 2024 election. Smith’s prosecutors oppose that bid.  Additionally, Trump is separately under criminal investigation by a Georgia state prosecutor for his attempt to get election officials there to reverse his loss to Biden in Georgia.

3-year-old driving golf cart in Florida hits and kills 7-year-old

Police in Florida said that a 3-year-old driving a golf cart stuck and killed a 7-year-old standing in the front yard of a home in Fort Myers.

According to a news release from the Florida Highway Patrol, the 3-year-old was approaching a right curve near a home on private property located on Orange River Boulevard, when the front of the cart collided with the 7-year-old who was standing in the front yard. The older child was taken to a hospital and pronounced dead; the 3-year-old wasn’t hurt. FHP Lt. Greg Bueno confirmed that the two were brothers.

Earlier this year, Gov. Ron DeSantis signed a bill, which goes into effect Oct. 1, that requires golf cart drivers be at least 15 years old with a learner’s permit or 16 with a driver’s license. Anyone who is 18 or older must have a valid government-issued ID. Previously, Florida law allowed a 14-year-old to drive a golf cart.

According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, more than 6,500 children are hurt by golf carts every year across the country. Just more than half of those injured are children under 12.
