Jelly Roll offers testimony in support of anti-fentanyl legislation

Jelly Roll addressed lawmakers last week to deliver testimony about the fentanyl crisis, attending a Senate Banking, Housing and Urban Affairs Committee hearing in Washington, D.C. to urge members of Congress to support anti-fentanyl legislation. The 39-year-old Jelly Roll (born Jason DeFord), has been open about his previous criminal charges, jail time and struggles with addiction. He encouraged officials to pass the FEND Off Fentanyl Act (Fentanyl Eradication and Narcotics Deterrence (FEND) Off Fentanyl Act), targeting the China-Mexico illicit fentanyl supply chain.

Ranking Member Tim Scott (R-S.C.) noted in his opening statement that it’s “so important for Americans to come together around such an important issue.” U.S. Senator Sherrod Brown (D-OH), Chairman of the Senate Committee on Banking, Housing, and Urban Affairs, said in his opening statement: “I’m guessing most of you didn’t have ‘Jelly Roll testifies at Senate Banking hearin’” on your 2024 bingo cards. But few speak – and sing – as eloquently, as openly, as, shall we say, viscerally about addiction as he does. There is a reason why Americans flock to his music and his concerts. He has a connection with people based on shared pain, shared challenges, shared hope.”

Jelly Roll thanked Brown and Scott for the opportunity to speak, posting a video on Instagram of his testimony with the caption: “I pray this message is the beginning of a real change and awareness when it comes to Fentanyl and Drug Addiction in America.”  Jelly said in his testimony: “During the time that I’ve been given to share my testimony here, I think it’s important to note before I start that in these five minutes I’ll be speaking, somebody in the United States will die of a drug overdose. And it is almost a 72% chance that during those five minutes, it will be fentanyl-related.” He noted during his testimony that he is “neither Democrat, nor Republican. In fact, because of my past, my right to vote has been restricted, (so) I have never paid attention to a political race in my life. Ironically, I think that makes me the perfect person to speak about this because fentanyl transcends partisanship and ideology, gentlemen and women … I’ve attended more funerals than I care to share with y’all. I could sit here and cry for days about the caskets I’ve carried of people I love dearly, deeply in my soul. Good people. Not just drug addicts. Uncles, friends, cousins, normal people. Some people that just got in a car wreck and started taking a pain pill to manage it. One thing led to the other. How fast it spirals out of control, I don’t think people truly, truly understand.

Jelly Roll also spoke about his history as a drug dealer, saying he was the “perfect” person to talk about the fentanyl crisis: “I was a part of the problem. I am here now standing as a man that wants to be a part of the solution. I brought my community down. I hurt people. I was the uneducated man in the kitchen playing chemist with drugs I knew absolutely nothing about. Just like these drug dealers are going right now when they are mixing every drug on the market with fentanyl, and they’re killing the people we love … It’s time for us to be proactive and not reactive…If we don’t talk to the other side of Capitol Hill and stop the demand, we are gonna spin our tires in the mud. Y’all are taking the first step, but I encourage you to take it outside of this room. Take it to your colleagues and your constituents, and you give them the most that you can.”

School principal dies days after school shooting in Iowa

The principal of Perry High School, the school involved in a deadly shooting on January 4 in Perry, Iowa, died early Sunday as the result of injuries he sustained in the incident. The wife of Principal Dan Marburger, Elizabeth, wrote on a GoFundMe page for the family: “At 8:00 am, Jan (14), Dan lost his battle. He fought hard and gave us ten days that we’ll treasure forever.” Marburger worked in the Perry school district for nearly 30 years (Perry is located in a rural part of Iowa about 40 miles northwest of the state capital of Des Moines).

Marburger is the second fatality of the school shooting at Perry High School on the first day of classes following winter break. The other victim is 11-year-old sixth grader Ahmir Jolliff, who died last week when 17-year old Dylan Butler opened fire on students and staff in the cafeteria of Perry High School, a common area that connected the high school and middle schools, after making ominous social media posts from what was believed to be a high school bathroom. After killing Jolliff and injuring several other students and staff, Butler died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound, with police saying he was found with a handgun and modified rifle near his body.

Marburger told the Perry Chief when he started there in 1995: “I always knew I’d be a teacher. I had great teachers I wanted to be like.” Early in his career, Marburger taught social studies for four years and then middle school computer skills for two years; he also taught physical education and had been an athletic director and middle school administrator.

4 dead, 1 critically injured in hot air balloon crash in Arizona

Four people were killed and one critically injured Sunday in a hot air balloon crash in Arizona. The tragedy took place at approximately 7:50 a.m. in the desert area east of Sunshine Boulevard and Hanna Road in Eloy, a small town with a population just over 15,000, and some 65 miles northwest of Phoenix known as “the skydiving capital of the world.” The cause of the crash was not immediately known.

According to the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), there were five people on board at the time of the deadly crash. Police said they’re looking into the incident alongside the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) and the FAA to determine the cause of the deadly crash. Investigators were on scene examining the downed balloon, identified by the NTSB as a Cameron Balloons A160 aircraft. An NTSB spokesperson said that “the preliminary information is that the balloon impacted desert terrain following an unspecified problem with its envelope.” The aircraft will be brought to a secure facility for additional evaluation.

The Eloy Police Department confirmed by email that all of those on board the balloon were adults but declined to offer additional specifics pending the result of the investigation, sharing in a statement: “The Eloy Police Department regretfully confirms that there are four deceased individuals and one person in critical condition as a result of this incident. Further information will be provided as it becomes available. We thank the community for their support and understanding as we navigate this tragic event.”

Eloy is home to two parachute manufacturers: Firebird USA and Sun Path Products, as well as the world’s largest skydive drop zone, Skydive Arizona, which is located around five miles from the site of the balloon crash.

Judge allows Donald Trump to speak at closing arguments at NY cvil fraud trial

On Thursday in the New York civil fraud trial of former President Donald Trump, Judge Arthur Engoron allowed Trump to speak at closing arguments, despite having denied a request from Trump to speak a day earlier. After Trump’s defense gave their closing argument in the morning, the former president left the courtroom and held a press conference at the Trump Building in New York. The prosecution delivered its closing arguments Thursday afternoon.

Trump was allowed to address the court, and Engoron directed Trump to promise that he would limit his comments to the facts of the case, to which Trump replied the case “goes outside just the facts.” Trump, who spoke for about five minutes, again accused Attorney General Laetitia James of being politically motivated in bringing the case against him and the Trump Organization, calling his financial statements “perfect” and saying the case is a “political witch hunt,” and shared his criticism of Judge Engoron but said the judge’s decision “may surprise some people. We’ll see what happens.” Trump’s attorney Chris Kise later delivered closing arguments for about two hours. ”

After he left the courtroom, Trump told reporters the case is a “political witch hunt the likes of which nobody has ever seen before. They owe me damages for what they’ve done. We’re a very innocent company. What we’ve run is a great company. That’s been proven. A very highly successful company.”

In the courtroom, Trump’s attorneys added that James attempted to “intimidate” Trump and other executives in his organization, and Kise told Engoron that his decision could have an impact on other large corporations in New York. Trump and the Trump Organization, headed by his sons Eric Trump and Donald Trump Jr., face a potential $250 million penalty for committing fraud. They were found guilty in the fall of inflating the value of their real estate properties.

Hunter Biden pleads not guilty at arraignment on tax charges

Before District Judge Mark Scarsi in the Central District of California on Thursday, Hunter Biden pleaded not guilty to nine federal tax charges. Federal prosecutors charged Hunter Biden in December with nine counts of tax crimes, including three felony and six misdemeanor charges related to his alleged failure to file and pay taxes, evasion of assessment and filing a false or fraudulent tax return. If convicted, Hunter Biden faces up to 17 years in prison.

In the 56-page indictment, prosecutors alleged Hunter Biden earned more than $7 million in gross income when he failed to pay taxes. They said he funded an “extravagant lifestyle” and evaded taxes by classifying some personal expenditures as business deductions. His indictments came after a plea agreement on two misdemeanor tax charges and a diversion agreement stemming from the firearms charge unraveled in court in July 2023 when the judge questioned whether the agreement would allow Hunter Biden to avoid potential future charges, as well as the charges related to his taxes.

The tax charges filed in California were brought by special counsel David Weiss in the second federal indictment of the president’s son secured by his office. Weiss, who was appointed U.S. attorney for Delaware by former President Donald Trump and named special counsel by Attorney General Merrick Garland in 2023, charged Hunter Biden with three felony gun charges in the state of Delaware, related to his alleged unlawful possession of a firearm. He pleaded not guilty to the gun charges in October.

The hearing is still underway where the conditions of his release and the timing for the case and timing for pre-trial motions will likely be determined.
