BMW recalls more than 720,000 cars due to electric water pump defect

On Tuesday, BMW announced it is recalling it is recalling 720,796 vehicles in North America due to an issue with the water pump’s electrical connector that may short circuit as a result of faulty installation, posing a fire hazard.

According to a National Highway Traffic Safety Administration report, the impacted vehicles have water pumps with insufficient sealing, and may be susceptible to fluid ingress at the electrical plug connector over time. There is the possibility that a short circuit could occur, and there’s the potential for a fire, in rare cases.

Recall documents posted by the NHTSA read that “an improperly sealed electrical connector on the water pump may be exposed to water and short circuit .. specifically, blowby-liquid from the positive crankcase ventilation system may collect on the intake air hose, eventually drip onto the plug connector .. this could increase the risk of a thermal event and, in rare cases, a fire.”

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said that the recall applies to the following BMW models:

  • BMW 228XI 2014-2016
  • BMW 328I 2012-2016
  • BMW 328XI 2012-2016
  • BMW 428I 2014-2016
  • BMW 428XI 2015-2016
  • BMW 528I 2012-2016
  • BMW X1 2012-2015
  • BMW X3 2013-2017
  • BMW X4 2015-2018
  • BMW X5 2016-2018
  • BMW Z4 2012-2016

Notification letters will be mailed to vehicle owners on October 4, where they will be instructed to take their cars to an authorized BMW center  where water pumps and plug connectors will be inspected and replaced as necessary for free. Per the recall report, a shield will be also installed to divert any fluid that might drop down onto the pump from the positive crankcase ventilation system’s intake air house.  Owners may contact BMW customer service at 1-800-525-7417.

BMW’s number for the recall is “24V-608.” Owners can also contact NHTSA’s safety hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (toll-free at 1-800-424-9153) or go to www.nhtsa.gov for further information.

Israel says they have retrieved the bodies of six Israeli hostages from Gaza

The Israeli military said Tuesday that it had recovered the bodies of six hostages who were taken into the Gaza Strip following the Hamas-led Oct. 7 terror attacks. The Israel Defense Forces said in a statement that troops recovered the bodies of six Israeli hostages in an overnight operation in the city of Khan Younis in southern Gaza. The operation came as the United States, Egypt and Qatar pushed for a cease-fire deal that would end Israel’s monthslong military offensive in Gaza and see the release of the hostages who remain held in the enclave.

In a joint statement, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) and the Israeli Security Agency (ISA) identified the hostages as: Haim Perry, 80; Yoram Metzger, 80; Avraham Munder, 79; Alexander Dancyg, 76; Nadav Popplewell, 51; and Yagev Buchshtav, 35.  Metzger, Munder, Popplewell and Buchshtav had family members who were also abducted but freed during a November cease-fire.

Secretary of State Antony Blinken said on Monday that he’d had a productive meeting with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, and he had accepted a bridging proposal for a cease-fire deal and that it was “now incumbent on Hamas to do the same.” Hamas on Tuesday expressed “astonishment” at the suggestion that it was holding up a deal, calling the comments by Blinken and President Joe Biden “misleading claims that do not reflect the true position of the movement, which is keen to reach a cessation of aggression. We consider these statements a renewed American green light for the government of Zionist extremists to commit more crimes against defenseless civilians, and in pursuit of the goals of exterminating and displacing our people.”

Netanyahu said in a statement on Tuesday: “tonight our forces returned the bodies of six of our hostages who were held by the murderous terrorist organization Hamas… we thank those involved in the operation for their bravery and determined action .. our hearts ache for the terrible loss.”

According to Israeli officials, more than 100 hostages remain held in Gaza, with around a third of them believed to be dead. Netanyahu said in a statement shared on X:  “The State of Israel will continue to make every effort to return all of our hostages — the living and the deceased.”

According to data from the Israeli Government Press Office, there are currently 109 Israeli hostages being held in Gaza, including 36 believed to be dead. More than 40,000 Palestinians have been killed and more than 92,000 injured during Israel’s war in Gaza, according to the health ministry in the enclave.

Jennifer Lopez files for divorce from Ben Affleck after two years of marriage

Jennifer Lopez and Ben Affleck are divorcing after two years of marriage. The news comes after rumors circulated over the summer concerning their potential split, with Lopez and Affleck spending much of the summer on opposite coasts. Multiple sources told PEOPLE in May that Affleck and Lopez were not living together in their Los Angeles home. In June, Affleck and Lopez put the mansion they shared together in Beverly Hills since June 2023 on the market, and Affleck later purchased a new $20 million home in Los Angeles in July.

According to court documents, Lopez filed for divorce from Affleck on Aug. 20 in Los Angeles Superior Court. News outlets reveal that Lopez listed the date of separation as April 26 and the couple does not have a prenup, with sources confirming that Lopez filed without an attorney. TMZ was the first to reported the news of the Lopez’s divorce filing.

Lopez and Affleck’s marriage came several decades after they originally dated in the early 2000s. The couple was engaged to be married in 2003, but postponed their nuptials and ultimately went their separate ways.

Following Lopez’s breakup with her ex-fiancé Alex Rodriguez in 2021, Lopez and Affleck rekindled their relationship, with the couple marrying in July 2022 in Las Vegas. Lopez announced their marriage on her website at the time: “We did it. Love is beautiful. Love is kind. And it turns out love is patient. Twenty years patient.” The next month, the couple celebrated their marriage during a lavish, second wedding ceremony in Georgia.

Affleck was previously married to actor Jennifer Garner, whom he divorced in 2018. The exes share three children: Violet, 18, Seraphina, 15, and Samuel, 12. Lopez was also previously married to actor Ojani Noa and dancer Cris Judd. She married her third husband, singer Marc Anthony, in 2004 before splitting in 2011 after seven years of marriage. The former couple shares 16-year-old twins Max and Emme.

1 killed, 6 missing after luxury superyacht sinks off Sicilian coast

According to officials in Italy, a 183-foot sailboat carrying 22 people sank early on Monday off the coast of the Italian island of Sicily following stormy weather in the area, killing at least one passenger.

Sources and Italian officials told CNBC that British tech magnate Mike Lynch and his daughter were among several other people still missing after the luxury superyacht sank near Sicily’s main city of Palermo during a violent storm. The U.K.-flagged vessel — named the Bayesian — sank off Porticello, near the coastal city of Palermo at around 5 a.m. local time (11 p.m. ET) with 22 people on board. Per the Associated Press, Lynch – described in U.K. media as “Britain’s Bill Gates” – was not among those rescued, but his wife Angela Bacares is said to have been found safe. The couple’s daughter Hannah, 18, is also said to be among those still missing (per BBC.)

According to the Italian coast guard and a local port authority, members of the coast guard have rescued 15 passengers, but six are still missing – with at least one American is believed to be among those still missing, as well as British and Canadian citizens also unaccounted for. Of those recovered, eight have been transported to local hospitals, officials said.

An authority from the Palermo Port Authorities told ABC News that the ship is currently located at a depth of around 164 feet, with firefighter divers now attempting to reach it. One body was recovered and six people were missing, with divers reaching the hull of the ship early on Monday and still searching the waters. The port official was unable to confirm whether any Americans were among the missing, but added that authorities were still working to verify the nationalities of those who had been on board. Four coast guard vessels, one helicopter and a team of fire brigade divers are involved in the search, which is being coordinated by the Palermo Coast Guard, the statement said.

Local Mayor Giuseppe D’Agostino wrote on Facebook that the “tragedy that struck our community is unparalleled in history. The administration has activated all channels with the police and is taking care of the people recovered alive so far. The search continues at sea and all we can do is pray and hope to find someone alive,” adding that local authorities are gathering clothes and finding accommodation for the survivors.

Lynch, 59, founded the enterprise software firm Autonomy and became the target of a protracted legal battle with Hewlett Packard after the U.S. tech giant accused him of inflating the company’s value in an $11 billion sale. He was acquitted of fraud following a three-month trial after being extradited from Britain to the U.S. last year.

Historic flooding in Connecticut kills at least 2 people, with hundreds evacuated

At least two people were found dead Monday in Connecticut, after over 100 were rescued after torrential rain brought extreme flooding to the western part of the state.Heavy rainfall in the Northeast has caused extensive flooding since Sunday, leading to the deaths and evacuations. Up to 10 inches of rain hit parts of Connecticut, resulting in what Connecticut Governor Ned Lamont called “unsafe conditions,” who said a state of emergency was still in effect.

Connecticut State Police said in a news conference Monday morning that two women died after they were “swept away from their vehicles” in floodwaters on Sunday in Oxford, Connecticut. A news release stated that State Police had responded to Route 67 in Oxford around 5 p.m. Sunday on a report of two missing people amid intense flooding. The bodies of Ethelyn Joiner, 65, and Audrey Rostkowski, 71, both of Oxford, were recovered Monday.

Flash flood warnings had been declared in Fairfield, New Haven, Litchfield and Hartford counties in Connecticut Sunday evening, while Suffolk County in Long Island, New York also saw warnings into Monday morning. Roads across western Connecticut were severely damaged, including a significant road collapse near Stevenson Dam in Monroe, CT (about 12 miles north of Bridgeport).   The National Weather Service said that reports of “water rescues, several mudslides, numerous washed out roadways and bridges as well as swollen rivers” were ongoing from Central Fairfield County into Northern New Haven County.

Roughly 10 inches of rainwater fell in 12 hours near the area of Oxford and Southbury, Conn.  In Oxford – about 15 miles northwest of New Haven – emergency crews saved over a dozen people Sunday, with two women were swept away in the floodwaters Sunday.  Connecticut State Police Col. Daniel Loughman said that two bodies believed to be the missing women were found Monday: “Last night the Connecticut State Police assisted with assets and in personnel in the rescue efforts to extract those who were stranded in Kettletown State Park as well as Jackson Cove on Lake Zoar. The only access to rescue was by boat. The efforts were successful and they were evacuated to a shelter in Southbury. Yesterday, it was reported that two women were swept away by floodwaters in the town of Oxford. Two individuals have been located today and it’s believed that the recoveries were of the individuals witnessed and reportedly swept away by floodwaters.”

The Danbury Fire Department said that multiple buildings were evacuated Sunday after city officials described a “mudslide situation” triggered by flooding. Emergency crews also evacuated 100 people from a housing complex for older people, and fire officials said at least 20 were rescued from flooded cars.

Connecticut Gov. Ned Lamont said in a statement: “It’s just a reminder that we have to hang together at a time like this, especially given the tragedy. Those two women just swept away. It’s just incredible, what happened there. “Do not ever attempt to drive through any flooded roads. A good number of roads in the western portion of the state are closed and are expected to remain closed for an extended period.” Real-time updates on road closures can be found at ctroads.org  When you see those yellow cones, stop. You may say, ‘Oh my gosh, look at that road, it looks like it’s OK to me, I don’t see that much water.’ There could be a culvert under there, water could be going under. That thing could go at any time. Please pay special attention there.”

Connecticut Deputy Commissioner of Department of Emergency Management and Homeland Security Brenda Bergeron said in a statement: “We are talking about rainfall, in some areas, in the 1,000-year level. So we’re talking anywhere from 25-year level, 100-year level, 500-year level, up to 1,000-year level. So it’s really historic, unprecedented flooding.”

Sen. Richard Blumenthal said the state would seek federal funding to repair all the damage: “Who would’ve thought the Little River would turn into a gushing torrent of destruction, which is what happened. That Little River became big. It became a huge, gushing torrent of destruction. We will seek federal help. Be absolutely sure – we will seek federal aid. They’re entitled to it. These communities have suffered an otherwise irreparable cost and damage, and there are programs available.”
