Pres. Biden, VP Harris visit Georgia, North Carolina to survey damage from Helene

In separate visits to Georgia and the Carolinas, President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris visited the Southeast region of the U.S. on Wednesday to survey damage wrought by Hurricane Helene, which is confirmed to have killed 177 people thus far. Hundreds of people remain unaccounted for following Helene’s destruction, with more than 150,000 households have registered for assistance with the Federal Emergency Management Agency.

The president said Tuesday that the cost of the massive storm could stretch into the billions of dollars: ‘We have to jump start this recovery process. This is urgent.’  Biden visited North Carolina taking an aerial tour of some of the hardest-hit parts of the state; while nearly 200 miles to the south in Georgia, Harris was in Augusta to survey Helene’s damage.  Harris shared: ″I’ve been reading and hearing about the work you’ve been doing over the last few days, and I think it really does represent some of the best of what we each know can be done. Especially when we coordinate around local, state, federal resources to meet the needs of people who must be seen, who must be heard. I am now listening.”

Before departing the White House, Biden announced he had directed up to 1,000 active-duty troops to support the North Carolina National Guard. Biden said in a statement: “These soldiers will speed up the delivery of life-saving supplies of food, water, and medicine to isolated communities in North Carolina — they have the manpower and logistical capabilities to get this vital job done, and fast. They will join hundreds of North Carolina National Guard members deployed under State authorities in support of the response.”

Wednesday’s visits by Biden and Harris come shortly after former President Donald Trump traveled to devastated Valdosta, Georgia, to see Helene’s destruction firsthand.

San Diego doctor pleads guilty in connection with overdose death of actor Matthew Perry

A San Diego doctor pleaded guilty on Wednesday to one count of conspiracy to distribute ketamine in connection with the death of “Friends” actor Matthew Perry.

Mark Chavez, 54, appeared in court before Judge Jean Rosenbluth in Los Angeles and pleaded to conspiring to distribute ketamine to Perry. Despite the plea deal, Chavez, who was part of a group federally charged in Perry’s death in August, faces up to 10 years in prison upon his sentencing, which will take place on April 2, 2025.

Perry was found dead in his jacuzzi at his home in Pacific Palisades, California nearly a year ago this month.

The other individuals charged in connection with Perry’s death include the actor’s live-in personal assistant Kenneth Iwamasa, 60, and Erik Fleming, 54, a friend of Perry’s who authorities described as a “street dealer.” Both have pleaded guilty and await sentencing. Also charged is Jasveen Sangha, 41, an alleged drug dealer known as the “ketamine queen” who has pleaded not guilty.

In his initial appearance in September, Chavez surrendered his medical license and agreed not to practice medicine. remaining free on a $50,000 bond.

Iran launches major missile attack on Israel

The Israel Defense Forces confirmed that Iran launched dozens of ballistic missiles toward Israel on Tuesday, in what it said was a response to Israel’s launching widespread attacks in Lebanon, including the killing of Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah and a ground invasion of the country’s south.

NBC News reported missiles being fired in both Tel Aviv and across the border in Tyre, Lebanon, with smaller streaks of light appearing to come from Israel’s aerial defense system as it tried to ward off the attack. Iran said it concluded the attack roughly an hour after the IDF first alerted that the missiles had been fired.  Israel Defense Forces (IDF) said after the attack that approximately 180 missiles were fired toward Israeli territory, and while no fatalities were reported, IDF spokesperson Rear Admiral Daniel Hagari called the barrage a “serious attack” and said “there will be serious consequences.”

Senior White House and Defense Department officials warned that Iran was preparing a ballistic missile strike targeting Israel: “The United States has indications that Iran is preparing to imminently launch a ballistic missile attack against Israel. We are actively supporting defensive preparations to defend Israel against this attack. A direct military attack from Iran against Israel will carry severe consequences for Iran.”

White House spokesperson Emilie Simons said in a post on X that Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris had met with the national security team regarding the attack threat: “They reviewed the status of U.S. preparations to help Israel defend against attacks and protect U.S. personnel.”

Iran’s new president, Masoud Pezeshkian laid the blame on Israel for escalating violence in the region. In a post on X, Pezeshkian defended Iran’s right to the attack against Israel and said that it launched the missiles “in defense of Iranian interests and citizens,” adding that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu should know that Iran “will stand firmly against any threat. This is just a glimpse of our capabilities. Do not engage in conflict with Iran.”

CNN reported that Secretary of State Antony Blinken said in a statement on Tuesday that the U.S. is “tracking events in the Middle East very closely and is committed to Israel’s defense. We’re watching developments, as I said, very carefully at this moment.”

Dockworkers strike at East and Gulf Coast cargo facilities for better wages, other protections

Tens of thousands of U.S. dockworkers spanning from Maine to Texas walked off the job and went on strike early Tuesday, regarding issues including higher pay and more job security. The strike affects some 24,000 workers and at 14 ports, raising fears of the damage it could cost to the U.S. economy. The ports account for more than half of the nation’s container imports, facilitating the transport of everything from toys to fresh fruit to nuclear reactors.

In a statement to ABC News, the International Longshoremen’s Association (ILA) confirmed the union’s first coastwide strike in nearly 50 years was underway. The statement from ILA President Harold Daggett said that “tens of thousands of ILA rank-and-file members started to set up picket lines at shipping ports up and down the Atlantic and Gulf coasts as of 12:01 a.m. USMX brought on this strike when they decided to hold firm to foreign-owned ocean carriers earning billion-dollar profits at United States ports, but not compensate the American ILA longshore workers who perform the labor that brings them their wealth. We are prepared to fight as long as necessary, to stay out on strike for whatever period of time it takes, to get the wages and protections against automation our ILA members deserve … ILA longshore workers deserve to be compensated for the important work they do keeping American commerce moving and growing. Meanwhile, ILA dedicated longshore workers continue to be crippled by inflation due to USMX’s unfair wage packages.”

The work stoppage is the first at East and Gulf Coast ports since 1977, and comes after an impasse in labor talks between the International Longshoremen’s Association (ILA) and the United States Maritime Alliance (USMX), a shipping industry group representing terminal operators and ocean carriers. According to USMX, the dockworkers strike involve approximately 25,000 workers, and close 14 ports: Baltimore; Boston; Charleston, South Carolina; Jacksonville, Florida; Miami (USMX groups Port Everglades in Ford Lauderdale, Florida, with the Port of Miami); Houston; Mobile, Alabama; New Orleans; New York/New Jersey; Norfolk, Virginia; Philadelphia; Savannah, Georgia; Tampa, Florida; and Wilmington, Delaware (per CBS News.)

President Joe Biden released a statement on Tuesday calling for a fair offer from the U.S. Maritime Alliance or USMX: “It is time for USMX to negotiate a fair contract with the longshoremen that reflects the substantial contribution they’ve been making to our economic comeback. I have urged USMX, which represents a group of foreign-owned carriers, to come to the table and present a fair offer to the workers of the International Longshoremen’s Association that ensures they are paid appropriately in line with their invaluable contribution. Ocean carriers have made record profits since the pandemic and, in some cases, profits grew in excess of 800% compared to their profits prior to the pandemic. Executive compensation has grown in line with those profits and profits have been returned to shareholders at record rates. It’s only fair that workers, who put themselves at risk during the [COVID-19] pandemic to keep ports open, see a meaningful increase in their wages, as well.”

According to experts, a prolonged East Coast and Gulf Coast port strike could moderately increase prices for a range of goods, with food products are especially vulnerable to an uptick in price.

Mitchell Tenpenny shares ‘Started Stoppin’ off new LP, ‘The 3rd’

Mitchell Tenpenny just dropped his third studio album, The 3rd, produced by Jordan Schmidt and featuring 20 tracks – including the recently-released song, ‘Started Stoppin’.

Started Stoppin’ is written by Mitchell, Ashley Gorley, Chase McGill and Schmidt, and Tenpenny said of the track:  “We wrote this song altogether at Ashley’s beach house. Someone said the phrase ‘started stoppin’ and it became our hook. It almost wrote itself. I think Chase came up with the best line in the song, ‘You quit loving me seven months ago. Last night I slept all night, that’s one night in a row.’ That line describes that feeling that you’re finally getting over them. I did it. I passed that mark and got over the hump. And then something happens that reminds you of them. I love how the song grooves with the bass and drums. It all came together lyrically and sonically. It’s one of my favorite songs I’ve ever done.”

Mitchell also recently launched his headlining “Woke Up In A Dream Tour” in Las Vegas at the Theater at Virgin Hotels, running through mid-November with Dylan Schneider as special guest.

Margo Price releases ‘Too Stoned to Cry’ featuring Billy Strings

Margo Price released her new single “Too Stoned To Cry,” featuring vocals and guitar from her friend Billy String.

Says Price: “It was such a joy to work with Billy on this song. He really nailed the vocals and laid down a beautiful lead. I have wanted to record this song for years now, ever since I heard the writer Andrew Combs sing it. My buddy Beau Bedford and I had been in the studio together working on an Orville Peck track, and I asked him to produce this single for me. He put together a really great band – Beau and I, plus my husband Jeremy Ivey played acoustic, Aksel Coe on drums, Misa Arriaga on Bass, Russ Pahl on pedal steel, Joey McClellan on electric. Once we got Billy to add his guitar and singing, I knew this song was gonna be a special recording.”

“Too Stoned To Cry” features a new sound and new bandmates from Price, and she shared: “When I first came on the scene, I was a countryfied, hard-headed, whiskey-drinkin’ nobody who was pissed off at the establishment. All of that’s still true, except for the whiskey-drinkin’ part. If anything, now that I’ve lived for a while inside of the establishment, I’m even more pissed off. I’ve let some people go, and I’m still fighting with others to let me be myself, but I know, I’m gonna make this next record the way I want to make it, no matter what it takes.”
