1 dead, multiple injured in explosion at U.S. Steel plant near Pittsburgh

An explosion at the U.S. Steel Clairton Coke Works about 15 miles southeast of Pittsburgh has left one dead and at least 10 injured, with some people still trapped under the rubble as emergency workers on site trying to rescue victims.

Allegheny County Emergency Services said the explosion at the plant began at approximately 10:51 a.m, when emergency medical services received a call for an “ongoing situation” at the plant for a potential mass casualty event, per the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.

A Level 3 Mass Casualty incident was declared and more resources across the region were deployed, with officials asking residents to stay away from the scene so emergency workers could respond. The Allegheny County Health Department also advised people who lived within a mile of the plant to stay inside.

Allegheny County Emergency Services spokesperson Kasey Reigner told local affiliate WPXI-TV that “dozens were injured” in the blast, adding that two people were missing as crews searched for those trapped. The explosion sent black smoke into the sky in the Monongahela Valley.  Reigner, said one person died in the explosion and multiple other people were treated for injuries. Several of those injured were taken to hospitals. Allegheny Health Network said it was receiving patients at several of its hospitals, and the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center said two patients were taken to Mercy Hospital.

U.S. Steel’s Clairton Coke Works is a massive industrial facility along the Monongahela River south of Pittsburgh, and considered the largest coking operation in North America. It is one of four major U.S. Steel plants in Pennsylvania that employ several thousand workers. The plant converts coal to coke, a key component in the steel-making process. To make coke, coal is baked in special ovens for hours at high temperatures to remove impurities that could otherwise weaken steel. The process creates what’s known as coke gas — made up of a lethal mix of methane, carbon dioxide and carbon monoxide.

U.S. Steel issued the following statement Monday afternoon following the explosion: “Around 11 a.m. ET on Monday, August 11, an incident occurred at U. S. Steel’s Clairton Plant, specifically at coke oven batteries 13 and 14. Emergency teams were immediately dispatched to the scene. Our top priority is the safety and wellbeing of our employees and the environment. We are working closely with relevant authorities to investigate the cause of the incident and will provide additional updates as they become available. Nearly 1,300 dedicated men and women work at the Clairton Plant each day, performing their jobs with the utmost safety. During times like this, U. S. Steel employees come together to extend their love, prayers, and support to everyone affected.’”

Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro posted on X: “Multiple explosions occurred today at U.S. Steel Clairton Coke Works in Clairton, PA. Since then, my Administration has been in constant contact with labor leaders and local officials, and I’ve spoken with@ACE_Innamorato to reiterate that the Commonwealth is here to provide any resources needed. Injured employees have now been transported to local hospitals to receive care, and search-and-rescue efforts remain active at the plant. If you’re in the area, continue to follow the instructions of local authorities. Lori and I are eternally thankful for the bravery of our first responders — and we continue to pray for the entire Clairton community.

Pennsylvania Sen. John Fetterman also wrote on X: “UPDATE: I was just on-site at the Clairton Coke Works. I’ve been talking with USW and US Steel officials to get more information. There is an active search and rescue underway, dozens injured, and per police there’s at least one unaccounted for.”

Rachel Brosnahan to star in Season 2 of ‘Presumed Innocent’ at Apple TV+

Rachel Brosnahan is set to star in and executive produce Season 2 of “Presumed Innocent” at Apple TV+.

The first season of Presumed Innocent, based on Scott Turow’s novel, debuted in 2024 and starred Jake Gyllenhaal as a prosecutor accused of killing a colleague.  Apple TV+ opted to make it an anthology rather than continue following Gyllenhaal’s character (the actor will remain an executive producer on season two).

The second season will be based on the book “Dissection of a Murder” by Jo Murray, which is due to be published in 2026. While Apple is not providing an official logline for the season, the description from publisher Pan Macmillan states, “When Leila Reynolds [Brosnahan] is handed her first murder case, she’s shocked at how high-profile it is: the murder of a well-respected, well-known judge. This shouldn’t be the kind of case she’s leading; it’s way beyond her expertise. But the defendant, Jack Millman, is clear. He wants her, and only her.”

The series marks Brosnahan’s first TV starring role since the conclusion of her hit Amazon series “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel,” which saw Brosnahan nominated for the Emmy for best actress in a comedy for all five seasons, winning the award in 2018. She also won two Golden Globes out of four nominations for her work in the series. Brosnahan will next be seen in James Gunn’s highly-anticipated “Superman” film in the role of Lois Lane.

David E. Kelley developed the series for television and serves as executive producer and co-showrunner. Erica Lipez will also serve as co-showrunner and executive producer on Season 2. J.J. Abrams and Rachel Rusch Rich executive produce for Bad Robot Productions

Mass shooting in Baltimore leaves 1 dead, 5 injured including 5-year-old girl

One man was killed and at least six people have been injured, including a 5-year-old girl, in a mass shooting in a Baltimore neighborhood over the weekend.

Baltimore Police Commissioner Richard Worley said  at a news conference that Northern District Officers responded to the 5100 block of Queensbury Avenue to investigate a call for a “reported shooting,” where they located six victims suffering from gunshot wounds,” the Baltimore Police said in a statement. The six victims included four males and two females, as well as the 5-year-old girl, who was shot in the hand. Worley said the child’s injury does not appear to be serious.

A 38-year-old man died from his injuries on the morning of Sunday, Aug. 10, police confirmed; a 23-year-old woman and three men aged 32, 33 and 52, suffering non-life-threatening injuries. Worley said in a news conference: “Both our homicide and district detective units are on the scene. We have very little information at this point. All we know is there’s multiple rounds fired, multiple victims,” adding that it appears someone “opened fire” as a group of people were sitting outside eating crabs.

Police believe that the victims were possibly targeted in the shooting; however,  no details of any possible suspects have been released at this time. The Baltimore Police Department restricted access to the area amid their investigation, writing on X:  “BPD is scene of a mass shooting at the intersection of Spaulding & Queensbury Avenues. Multiple streets in the area are closed to the public. Please avoid the area. More information to follow as it becomes available.”

Police are asking anyone who has information about the incident to call Homicide Detectives at 410-396-2100. Those who wish to remain anonymous may contact the Metro Crime Stoppers tip line at 1-866-7LOCKUP. Those with information can also text tips through the Metro Crime Stoppers of Maryland website.

Israeli PM Netanyahu defends military offensive, says starvation claims in Gaza are ‘exaggerated’

Speaking at a press briefing for international journalists in Jerusalem on Sunday, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu defended plans for a military push into Gaza City, insisting that Israel “has no choice” but to see the fight through and ensure Hamas is completely defeated. Netanyahu declared:  “We will win this war, with or without the backing of others.”

Netanyahu emphasized that Israel’s objective is not to occupy the territory permanently, but rather to “liberate Gaza.” He noted that there is a “relatively short timeline” for the next phase of operations. According to Netanyahu, Israel’s goals include stripping the enclave of weapons, keeping the Israeli military in control of overall security, and eventually handing administrative responsibilities to a civilian body that is not Israeli.

Netanyahu has come under intensifying pressure as his plan to seize Gaza City drew criticism from across the political spectrum and mass protests in Israeli cities, while Gaza’s Health Ministry reported rising malnutrition deaths. Netanyahu, however, denied claims of famine in Gaza, and acknowledged only “deprivation” – insisting Israel has “no choice” but to defeat Hamas, and stating that “hundreds of aid trucks” have entered the enclave. Netanyahu went on to place blame on Hamas for the dire humanitarian situation, including civilian casualties, widespread destruction, and limited access to aid. He claimed Hamas still has “thousands of armed fighters” in Gaza and said many Palestinians are “pleading” for liberation from the group’s control.

Netanyahu’s remarks came just two days after Israel’s Security Cabinet approved a plan authorizing the military to take control of Gaza City — a decision that has drawn sharp criticism both domestically and abroad. Opponents have warned it could worsen the humanitarian crisis in Gaza and place the hostages still held by Hamas since October 7, 2023, at greater risk.

The U.N. Security Council met in emergency session Sunday, with Britain, France, and Australia among those condemning the plan. The U.K.’s envoy warned it would “deepen the suffering” of Palestinians. The Gaza Health Ministry said five more people, including two children, died of malnutrition in the past 24 hours, bringing the toll to 217, among them 100 children.
